The Innocence Between Boo Radley and Emmett Till
By Madison Wells In Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird, Boo Radley is the mysterious character nobody knows anything about. Boo Radley, isolated from the outside, saves the lives of Scout and Jem (Delayed Adjective Clause). The discovery of Boo Radley’s truth leads to his innocence. In Mississippi Trial, 1955, Emmett Till is just an African American from Chicago. Since he is from Chicago, he is unfamiliar with the ways of the South. After whistling at a white woman, two men kidnap Emmet and kill him. His innocence is not entirely seen by the town. Boo Radley and Emmett Till both are innocent, yet the town finds them guilty. In To Kill a Mockingbird, when Scout, Jem, and Dill pretend to be the Radley’s, Scout narrates, “‘Give me those scissors,’ Atticus said. ‘They’re no things to play with. Does this by any chance to do with the Radleys?’” (Lee 53). Atticus believes that Boo has done nothing wrong. When the children bother the Radley’s, Atticus tells them to stop pestering them. Boo has done nothing wrong to the children and Atticus wants to dispel any rumors they have heard. In a similar way, during Mississippi Trial, 1955 Hiram runs into Emmett after a day of fishing and eating lunch. He sees Emmett playing in the river with boys close to his age. Hiram points out, “‘Trouble?’ Emmett waved a hand at them, ‘That’s one of my friends. The old Tallahatchie lifeguard. He ain’t no trouble.” (Crowe 88). Emmet truly believes that there is nothing wrong with being friends with a white person. He thinks that it is normal to be friendly with a white man.
