In To Kill A Mockingbird one theme that is portrayed is innocence. When hearing innocence many people think of not being guilty, but in To Kill A Mockingbird innocence has a much deeper meaning. Innocence is seen throughout the entire book. For example in chapter 9 we see Scout's innocence. Chapter nine begins with Scout going to school and hearing all the awful things her classmates are saying about Atticus. Her classmates are saying these things because Atticus is defending a black man. Scout goes home and asks her father why her classmates think this is wrong and why he is defending Tom if everyone else wouldn't. Atticus says, “Because I could never ask you to mind me again. Chapter 15 is where Tom Robinson was put in jail. Atticus goes to sit outside the jailhouse to make sure nobody tries to hurt Tom. Scout, Jem, and Dill decide to follow Atticus to see what he is doing. Soon a mob comes over to Atticus and demands that he let them in to hurt Tom and they begin to threaten Atticus. Scout, who is nearby, runs to Atticus. She recognizes one of the men in the group is Mr.Cunningham. She begun to talk to him about entailment a and his son Walter. Everyone is the group is shocked and she is wondering why so told Atticus, “Well, Atticus, I was just sayin‘ to Mr. Cunningham that entailments are bad an’ all that, but you said not to worry, it takes a long time sometimes... that you all’d ride it out together... I was slowly drying up, wondering what idiocy I had committed.” When Scout decided to run to her father she had no idea that the mob was there to hurt Atticus. She could've easily been injured herself by the mob. When she got to the mob she talked to Mr. Cunningham like she was his friend. She didn't realize what Mr. Cunningham was really up to.
