Throughout Fahrenheit 451, Ray Bradbury uses the motif of ‘insects and arachnids’ for their nonhuman characteristics and natural behaviors to depict the perversion of the natural order through controlling and destructive technologies, respectively. During the story, insects and their nonhuman behavior are used to describe controlling technologies that distort the order of nature. When Mildred and Montag finished their unpleasant conversation about the death of Clarisse, “the electric thimble moved like a praying mantis on the pillow, touched by [Mildred's] hand” (Bradbury 45).
