Irony is a fickle thing. Some people can laugh at irony and its unusual and unexpected ways it can reveal itself. But to the author of the book Just Mercy, Bryan Stevenson, didn’t find irony to be funny whatsoever. This however did not stop him from ironically naming his book. One would think that a book with the word mercy in its title would be about just that.

The story and the movie “The Ransom of Red Chief” have a bunch of differences. In the movie, Sam tells a random kid to send a letter to Mr. Dorset. But in the story, Sam took the letter to the post office and a mail man took it to Mr. Dorset. Another difference is that in the story, the kidnappers offered Johnny Dorset some candy and kidnapped him. But in the movie, the kidnappers didn’t offer him candy and just put him in a trunk.

The movie version of “The Ransom of Red Chief,” is better than the short story by O. Henry because more characters are introduced, the story has a humorous and lighthearted tone, and there is more conflict. The changes and additions needed to make improvements to the story include having more action, using more characters, and showing Red Chief with more emotion. The first reason the movie is favorable is how it introduces more characters. In the short story, the only starring characters are Red Chief, Mr. Dorset, Sam and Bill.
The cop was going around the neighborhood to see how good everyone’s security is. Later on that specific cop was going around the same neighborhood robbing some of the of the houses he was checking. This demonstrates dramatic irony because we didn’t expect a cop end up being one of the burglars. In “Ransom of Red Chief” dramatic irony is shown in the story. Henry’s “The Ransom of Red Chief”. It tells the tale of two con men, Bill and Sam, who regret kidnapping a young boy, nicknamed ‘Red Chief’, after he proves to be wild and uncontrollable.
