Money means different things to everyone. Money could mean power, happiness, and success to some people, but it could also mean greed, debt, and problems to others. The only way money can have value is by the value we give it. In the story “Contents of the Dead Man’s Pocket,” Tom Benecke had been working for months on a paper for work, while his wife went to the movies. The paper flew out the window, onto the ledge, and he had to work to get the paper back.
The mayor of New York “is moving the homeless off the streets and into Bellevue Hospital” (3). By moving all the homeless and lower class into a shelter proves that this act is a good deed. The mayor of New York did not have to help the lower class but he did anyways. This shows that we do have people in our world who care enough to help people in need. Singer and Ascher find a pint of comparison when it comes to helping the lower class.
In The Things They Carried, Tim O’Brien describes how soldiers physically and emotionally adapted to Vietnam. In the chapters “The Dentist” and “Stockings,” he uses irony to accentuate these adaptations, in order to illustrate that for those who fought in the war coping was as essential as surviving. In “The Dentist,” Curt Lemon’s desire to be perceived as strong highlights his burrowed uncertainty of his courage.
In The City of Ember, irony occurs throughout the story. For instance, Doon discovers the mayor’s treasure room in the pipeworks. “‘The mayor has a secret treasure room in the pipeworks’” (158). By observing this quote, we can see that the mayor has a connection with Looper because when Looper states, “‘Message for the mayor,’ he said… delivery at eight’” (31).

Though O'Brien's use of juxtaposition and shifts in point of view, he is able to not only show the “crazy powers of war”, but also conveys how war stories aren't true unless they are unbelievable. O’Brien talks about how believable war stories are made up as well as how “a true war story is never moral [and]... if [it]... seems moral, do not believe it” (O’Brien 65). The Vietnam war was a dark and horrific place for a lot of people, and O’Brien helps share those emotions through his “non-moral stories”. In one of the stories O’Brien describes a story where they are in middle of the jungle they heard “chamber music “ and “all these different voices…[then a] cocktail party” (O’Brien 71).
The novel “Long Way Down” by Jason Reynolds is filled with examples of irony that contribute to the story’s themes and impact. One example of irony in the book is the character Will’s decision to seek revenge for his brother’s murder. Despite the fact that Will’s brother Shawn was killed in a gang-related incident. This ironic twist in the plot reinforces the idea that cycles of violence and revenge do not truly solve anything, as they only perpetuate the same harmful patterns.
