In the short stories “Identities” by W.D. Valgardson and “Sentry” by Fredric Brown, situational irony is used to reveal a theme of assumptions. Valgardson’s use of irony in his short story, “Identities” illustrates how people are quick to judge. The protagonist assumes dressing similar to the gang members would ensure his safety, however, ironically, “the police were trained to see an unshaved man in blue jeans as a potential criminal” (Valgardson, 13). The irony reveals the negative effects of prejudgment made by the protagonist and the officer, which leads to the death of the central character. The short story, “Sentry” by Fredric Brown also uses situational irony to acknowledge the fact that assumptions are always made.
However the narrator doesn’t care she is just happy and positive to get a new doll. The narrator is positive about her situation because her optimism, her age and her socio-economic status. However readers should feel negatively about the situation because the feeling of ungratefulness and the feeling of entitlement. People need to be grateful for what they have because not everyone has the same advantages. Some people struggle and people need to realize that.
The Things They Carried by Tim O’Brien was a memoir recollection of various stories about those in the Vietnam War during the Cold War. O’Brien highlights many things in this novel from how to tell a war story to personal experiences and feelings in one. Norman Bowker is a soldier from this novel that embodies feelings of a war veteran. He is isolated and unable to remove the guilt of his friend Kiowa's death from his memory because he feels responsible. O’Brien uses him to tackle the experience of a veteran in a non-judgmental tone.
Visually, the use of irony here indicates the experience of survival as seen from Bridie and Sheila as the two had refused to jump. It also reveals the element of truth that prevailed as the character’s survival was one of living in fear, struggle, and
The story "The Necklace" and "Lamb to the Slaughter" both show a great of showing a situation irony but one does a better job of showing it. I believe the story "The Necklace" shows it better. The story "Lamb to the Slaughter" does show irony but it wasnt good as the story"The Necklace". The story "The Lamb to the Slaughter" took place in the 1950.It was about a wife that was 6 month pregnant and a husband. The wife killed her husband with a lambs leg that she was about to cook.
As regular people we know that when we damage someone we love, we try to find redemption in any way possible. Fear, pride and many other factors play in the act of doing what is considered to be morally right. In Khaled Husseini’s The Kite Runner, the protagonist, Amir, deals with a situation where he is confronted by deciding weather to help a dear friend or ignore a harsh situation. All of this leads to the author using symbolism, irony and imagery. Irony is found in many ways of literature, and the book The Kite Runner is one of them.
Dramatic irony is usually an over the top, tragic form of irony. Both Edgar Allen Poe’s “The Tell-Tale Heart” and Shirley Jackson’s “The Lottery” are great examples of an ironic situation. Every expresses the common theme in their own way. Although both of these literally pieces provide us with the theme of irony, Edgar Allen Poe's "The Tell-Tale Heart" gives the reader a sense of suspense with the irony that proves to be more effective. Poe's "The Tell-Tale Heart" emphasizes on how a man’s thoughts and perception can affect oneself and other’s lives.
Women were not allowed to walk freely. “the daughters were grateful, they never left home.” (Song 10-11) The speaker used irony to satirize that women cannot have the right to determine their own fate as it is their parents to determine on their foot binding. The only thing that they can do is to accept with a “grateful” heart.

Short Story Irony Multitudes of authors use different forms of irony to signify the opposite meaning and to entertain an audience such as situational, verbal, and dramatic irony. Situational irony is an event that occurs and is the opposite of what is expected as displayed in “To Build a Fire”. Moreover, verbal irony suggests the opposite of what is meant disclosed in “The Interlopers”. Finally, dramatic irony is when the reader knows something, but the character does not. Authors use irony to develop their respective themes in “To Build a Fire,” “The Interlopers,” and “The Necklace” by displaying, naturalism, sarcasm, and drama.
This is a great example of her knowing that her father and brothers rely on her and her mother to do all the chores. With the young sixteen year old girl, she was involved in an arranged marriage with an older man. The older man had given her this stunning ring one night. At the end of the night she had taken it off her finger and placed it down. In the morning she could not find it, and had informed her husband that she had no idea where it went.
The protagonist of ‘The Necklace’, Madame Loisel, live a rather steady, ordinary middle-class life in the beginning of the story. However, she views that she is intended for a luxurious life, and, therefore, does not cherish what she has. She takes a step forward to her desires, as she was invited to a ball where all the upper-class woman would be, yet she was unhappy with the fact that she does not even have a stone to put on.
In the story "The Necklace" is about a couple who is in the middle class stance, and the wife is very unhappy with this she wants more. Her husband comes back from work with a letter saying; you are invited to a big ball. the wife starts to freak out saying that she doesn 't have anything to were, the husband goes out and buys her a dress. She still wasn 't happy with this, she wanted jewels with it. So, she heads out and ask her friend for some, she finds this beautiful necklace.
