Isolation as a Way of Protection Sometimes people would rather walk away from their problems instead of facing them. Isolation is a way of feeling protected for some people due to their fear of being hurt because of bad experiences. Walking away and isolation are effective ways of avoiding problems; however, isolation will not change the reality of life and the good or bad that comes with it. In the movie The Village directed by M. Night Shyamalan, "the Elders" isolate themselves and their families to be protected from the real world, but in the end, the movie demonstrates that people need each other in order to be happy and safe. Lucius has to stop isolating himself from Ivy to be happy and to improve his quality of life. During a conversation between Ivy and Lucius, Ivy explains, "Sometimes we don 't do things we want to do so that others won 't know we want to do them" (Village). Ivy is making a reference to Lucius being distant. Lucius would rather be isolated before being happy for the sake of Ivy and Kitty 's sisterhood. Therefore, at the beginning of the movie, Lucius was distant to Ivy as if he was avoiding her. When they have a conversation on the rocks, the reason why he is avoiding her is revealed. Lucius is unconsciously following the same pattern of actions as the elders. Lucius is isolating himself from the person that he loves to not cause pain to a third person.
