Did jealousy ever cause you to do something you regret? In the novel “A Separate Peace” by John Knowles, two young men attending Devon during the time of world war II. Gene, one of the young men, is facing an internal conflict against his friend Finny. Throughout this novel Gene recovers many ideas that may or may not be true causing him to hurt his best friend. Gene has this ongoing thought throughout the story.
“There is a time in every man’s education when he arrives at the conviction that envy is ignorance; that imitation is suicide” (Emerson). The character Gene learns of this not until after many trials and a great tragedy. In A Separate Peace by John Knowles, the idea of self-reliance is greatly stressed. The novel A Separate Peace conveys how Gene’s envy and imitation of Finny affect him, how Gene’s envy and imitation affect their relationship with Finny, and Gene’s achievement of peace. The envy towards and imitation of Funny greatly affect Gene.
All of the years she has spent being critically poor are for nothing. When Mathilde finally tells Madame Forestier what really happened to her necklace, she says “Oh, my poor Mathilde! But mine was imitation. It was worth at the very most five hundred francs” (8)! Madame Loisel realized then that all of the years she had spent in abject poverty were in vain.
A Separate Peace A Separate Peace is a fictional novel that explores the consequences of jealousy in an incredibly close friendship. Gene, the protagonist, has to fight an unending emotional battle against his desire to be better than his naive and trusting friend, Phineas. Jealousy completely consumes Gene’s emotional life, it causes everyone to lose trust and respect for him, and forces him to watch his best friend suffer because of his own treacherous actions. Once the novel begins, we see Gene becoming close friends with Phineas, or Finny for short, and Gene starts by describing a time when his pride first controls him.
While I can agree this ideal of envy is not necessarily harmful to character development, I cannot deny the possibility that constructive envy can turn into destructive envy, thereby leading to daughter vices including jealousy and hatred (Perrine & Timpe pg. 235). Therefore, it is important for the individual to observe how they envy, and what philosophic concern causes them to use envy as a general motivator. Not one person has lived a life without experiencing jealousy. The quote,”You can be the moon and still be jealous of the stars”, by Gary Allan, accurately describes many people’s situations. The moon might represent someone with more of something, while the stars depict someone with less. Everyone has a different amount of many things; including money, happiness, love, confidence, fame, and family. Contrary to popular belief someone that is wealthy can just as easily be jealous of someone who has less materialistic items, as it is for someone on a lower economic level to be jealous of someone with more money.
Charles Kuralt once said, “ The love of family and the admirations of friends is much more important than wealth and privilege.” This quote shows how jealousy and popularity aren’t as important as relationships in your life. In the book, A Separate Peace, Gene has different priorities than relationships. Gene, a young boy who attends Devon boarding school, goes through many different trials along his grade school journey. He faces problems with friends and school life during the time of World War two and the draft being in full swing.
Furthermore, family-wise, there are not many similarities between these two characters. Roger has no family to support him and he needs to provide for himself. Mathilde however, has a loving and doting husband, wanting to please her with fancy dresses and invitations to parties. Her husband may love her, but in the story “The Necklace”, he told her to lie about losing the necklace and instead say that they broke the clasp and had to replace it. In saying this, her husband basically got them into this whole “I’m poor, woe is me” mess.
