Maturity Characters in “To KIll A Mockingbird” are changing a lot throughout the book.A character that has evolved and changed the most is Jem.Jem has changed the most because he has matured and understands why Boo Radley does not come out of his house. One way Jem is evolving is when he begins to learn more about the town as he grows up and begins to understand new things. ¨I think I'm beginning to understand why Boo Radley's stayed shut up in the house all this time... it's because he wants to stay inside" (Lee 304). Atticus is being shamed in the town of Maycomb and Jem learns more about the people and how they talk about each other. “[Jem] was certainly never cruel to animals, but I had never known his charity to embrace the insect world. ‘Why couldn't I mash him?’ I asked. ‘Because they don't bother you,’ Jem answered in the darkness¨ (Lee 320). Jem knows to not hurt others if they are not hurting you. He is also teaching Scout to understand the meaning, and being mature about the situation. In this case he is being mature and respectful in the situation. On the other hand, Scout has evolved as well when she shows that she is committed to listen to her father and be mature. “After my bout with Cecil Jacobs when I committed myself to a policy of cowardice, word got around that Scout Finch wouldn't fight any more, her daddy wouldn't let her” (Lee 119). Adults do not settle problems with fighting and Atticus is telling Scout to handle problems like an adult.
