The Crucible There is no greater fall, than a fall off a pedestal. In the play, “The Crucible’ by Arthur Miller, the protagonist John Proctor endures many struggles and as a consequence had many mistakes. Unluckily for John he was placed on a pedestal, he was viewed in the town as a religious figure. Although, through his closeted flaws he fell from his grace, that downfall eventually led to his execution.
3rd, Meyer, Cyrus Proctor’s Journey John Proctor, one of the main characters in Arthur Miller’s, The Crucible, defines the perception of a sinned man. The play explains an outbreak in a village in which a Puritan society using a theocracy government convicts hundreds on the word of a few girls, falsely accusing townspeople of witchcraft, therefore bringing havoc to the town and John seeks to end the lies of the main antagonist, Abigail. Through the play, Proctor gets introduced to many different situations showing the reader changes of Proctor’s character such as being depicted as a corrupted, sinned man in the beginning of the play to a righteous character near the end. In the second act, John Proctor acts very aggressive towards others and commits cruel acts in the name of his Puritan village showing a lack of good moral values as well as respect for others.
John Proctor's main flaw was his excessive pride which sealed his fate. I myself felt his death transformed Salem’s ways of thinking and increased their own knowledge. The Crucible - Conflict Analysis John Proctor Internal: John Proctor’s most eminent internal conflict is over the sin he has committed, adultery. Proctor cheated on his wife with Abigail Williams, and this makes Proctor feel incredibly guilty because in the town, he is “respected and even feared” (19). He tried very hard, and succeeded, with keeping this moral crime to himself. He still walked about Salem as if he was “an untroubled soul,” (21) however, avoiding the sin again would be a difficult task. Abigail flirts with him, in attempt to have him for one last night, and it’s obvious Proctor has an arduous time pushing her away.

He shows through a story that the witch trials were much more than just people calling others witches. There was deceit, pain, greed, and more. John Proctor is a good man despite anything others may say about him. He displays three very noble qualities throughout the witch trials which are bravery, honesty, and an overall goal to save lives even to the point where he sacrificed his. While many argue John is a bad man because he committed adultery they are entirely mistaken. Just because he had one bad sin gives no right to anybody to call him a bad person when clearly the good side of him is shown more than the bad. John Proctor is a good man who displays the characteristics of a hero and could be seen as one for giving his life for his friends.

In the town of Salem, in 1692, a group of young ladies by the names of Betty Williams, Abigail Williams and Tituba were found dancing in the forest naked by Reverend Parris, Abigail’s’ uncle. Reverend Parris assumed that they were participating in witchcraft. This idea of witchcraft spread through the city of Salem and the citizens began accusing each other of being witches.
