Imagine you're outside a burning church and you hear kids screaming, what would you do? This is the situation Johnny Cade faced in the Outsiders. Johnny and his friend Ponyboy had been staying in the church after killing a bully. They assumed the building was on fire due to their cigarettes. Johnny chose to save the kids because he’s heroic, he wants to redeem himself for killing the bully, and he thinks their lives are more valuable. First of all, Johnny is heroic because he saved the kids from the burning church. When they were in the church he said “Shut up! We’re goin’ to get you out”(Hinton, 79). This shows that he is a man on a mission and he really wants to get them out. Also when they were in the church Ponyboy says “He looked like he was having the time of his life”(Hinton, 79). This shows he loves saving people. A final reason he’s heroic is because Johnny shoved Ponyboy to the window to save Ponyboy instead of saving himself. After Johnny killed Bob he said "Stop it!" Johnny gasped from between clenched teeth. "Shut up about last night! I killed a kid last night. He couldn't of been over seventeen or eighteen, and I killed him. How'd you like to live with that?"(Hinton, 64). This shows he regrets killing Bob who is a kid.
