No matter the century or the story, humans have been the cause of destruction and death. The people of this Earth have been killing each other for land, power, and riches. Optimists hope that one day peace will prevail and the fighting will cease. However, the stories that I have been reading prove otherwise. Many of these stories show that not only will war never cease, but that humanity itself will die along with any morals or ethics that they once held. In “The Martian”, there is a good example of how humanity no longer exist in the future. All the scientist aboard the space ship are hungry for power and are willing to destroy civilizations to achieve their goals. The quote references Judgment Day which is believed to be the day when God will come to Earth and save some and punish others. Judgment Day is also a synonym for Doomsday, this would be end of the world and of mankind. The quote also mentions the Archangels and how the narrator feels as though these angels are dragging him across the universe with unnatural sounds surrounding him. This illustrates the pain that the people on board the ship are feeling, which would be nothing compared to the hell the ones bellow are being dragged through. The man in charge, Arnott, seems to be enjoying the torture his delivering to the masses down below. He even mentions kicking it up a notch to “hear us really hum.” Pirolo asks the members of the board who were affected by this inhumane torture to have a drink and to hide their weakness and pity.
