In the book 1984, George Orwell left various clues to why Julia and Winston no longer love each other after what happened in the Ministry of Love. Julia and Winston no longer love each other due to when they both confessed to O’Brien that the only thing in world that they both wouldn’t give up was each other, when Julia threw looks of contempt and hate to Winston and when Julia admitted that, after what happens at the Ministry of Love, people don’t feel the same, For instance, the Ministry of Love resulted in many horrible things including causing Julia to view Winston with contempt and hatred several times in their meeting. The author wrote, “All you care about is yourself . . . and after that you don’t feel the same toward the other person any longer” (Orwell 240). This quote elaborates that the feeling that they had before for each other before the Ministry of Love was destroyed and altered like the history books in 1984. It is implied in the quote that Julia no longer loved or was capable of loving Winston when she said specifically “you don't feel the same toward the other person any longer”. A example of “only caring about yourself” was when Julia and Winston were sent to room 101 where there both subjected to their biggest fears. The narrator states, “But he had suddenly understood that in the whole world there was just ONE person whom he can transfer his punishment …. and he was shouting frantically, over and over. “Do it to Julia! Do it to Julia! Not me! Julia! I don’t care what you do to her…”. In other words, Winston knew in the back of his mind why he was in room 101 and what he had to do in order to stop the pain and protect himself which connects with the quote from Julia mentioned above about only worrying about yourself in the Ministry of Love. The reason why the party subjected Winston and Julia to exercises like that was to make each of them have no mental capacity to love each other since they would only care about self
