One of the oldest methods of communication was telling stories, and there are a myriad of cultures with a rich oral tradition. Sometimes the orality of a source can contribute to implementation of a variety of themes that can result in a shift of perspective. Beowulf is a prime example of an instance when implementation of a certain theme influences the manner in which a story is viewed. As it is known today, Beowulf is drenched with Christian themes that could have been implanted for several different reasons. One notable reason may have been to satiate a Christian audience. Consequently, the themes are salient in the manner that the story’s central conflict of good versus evil has ties to Christianity. A shift in paradigm in Scandinavian culture and in European culture alike is evident as the inclusion of Christianity is able to facilitate an adoption of sorts that prove to be benificial to scandinavian culture and Beowulf. With the reigning terror elicited by Grendel waning, a sense of security swept into Hrothgar. Along with Beowulf’s triumph over Grendel signaling his imminance—his presence ruminated in the world of Beowulf, creating a security comparable to the security Christianity gave people.
