Texas is home to nearly 10,000 nurse practitioners. Nurse practitioners (NPs) in Texas do not have as many freedoms as NP 's in many other states. In fact, Texas falls at the lower end of the spectrum regarding the freedoms it offers nurse practitioners. House Bill 1885 would grant full practice authority in Texas to all advanced practice registered nurses (APRNs), including nurse practitioners (NPs). It would authorize APRNs to evaluate and diagnose patients; order and interpret diagnostic tests; and initiate and manage treatments; prescribing of medications, these are currently job descriptions of APRNs and NPs that they are already doing, however, it would move these items under the exclusive licensure authority of the Texas Board of Nursing.
Hi Katherine, I agree that leadership and management program are a great part of a nursing school since we need to continue to be a role model for new nurses entering the career not only to teach them nursing skills need in the profession, but also to encourage them to further their education like we are doing it.

Professional Mission Statement The knowledge I gained in this Professional Roles and Value course is that nursing has many professional roles. The changes of nursing from earlier history to today show a promise to the advancement and development of different nursing career opportunities in the future. Understanding regulatory agency, professional nursing organization, nursing history, professional nursing figures, theories, and nursing code of ethics, my knowledge has broadened in nursing. Currently only 12 states allow nurse practitioners to prescribe medications without restriction and you also mentioned that the other 38 states require physician collaboration or restrictions on controlled substances (allnurses, 2013). However, many states have made, and continue to make, changes to existing laws that regulate scope of practice for APRNs, including independent prescribing privileges.
