Klipspringer is a friend of Gatsby’s who virtually seems to live in Gatsby’s mansion. He is “A man named Klipspringer was there so often and so long that he became known as “the boarder.”—I doubt if he had any other home” (Fitzgerald).” As Klipspringer is often times found at Gatsby’s mansion, F. Scott Fitzgerald may be alluding to Klipspringers dependence upon Gatsby.
Gatsby tells Nick that he came from a very wealthy family, and that he studied at Oxford University. “I’ll tell you God’s truth.” His right hand suddenly ordered divine retribution to stand by. “I am the son of some wealthy people in the Middle West—all dead now. I was brought up in America but educated at Oxford, because all my ancestors have been educated there for many years. It is a family tradition” (Fitzgerald). Gatsby alludes to his family’s great fortune and his education at Oxford. Regardless of Gatsby’s intellect, he states that his whole family was educated there, therefore implying he may have “bought” his way into the school.

Wolfshiem is a business associate of Gatsby. He is Jewish, and he helped fix the World Series in 1919. “Meyer Wolfsheim? No, he’s a gambler.” Gatsby hesitated, then added coolly: “He’s the man who fixed the World’s Series back in 1919.” “Fixed the World’s Series?” I repeated. The idea staggered me. I remembered, of course, that the World’s Series had been fixed in 1919, but if I had thought of it at all I would have thought of it as a thing that merely HAPPENED, the end of some inevitable chain. It never occurred to me that one man could start to play with the faith of fifty million people—with the single-mindedness of a burglar blowing a safe” (Fitzgerald).
