Should Major Casinos be Built in Georgia? Edwards and Wattenberg define Federalism as, “a way of organizing a nation so that two or more levels of government share formal authority over the same area and people. (Edwards and Wattenburg,70)” When the United States first started to form a central government their objective was to never allow for a dominating power to take over the country again. To do so they created a division of power and made it possible for states and more so the “people” the right to have more of an impact on government. Or so were their intended thoughts when creating the constitution and the branches. In doing so their focus constrained national government but left a loose string as to what the states and their constitutions could do.
Tradition is done by many around the world and depending on where you are from tradition can be good or bad. In the stories, “The Lottery” by Shirley Jackson and “The Hunger Games” by Suzanne Collins, we are presented with a similar tradition but a very different atmosphere around the people and the setting of said tradition. In this literary analysis essay we will look at the different atmosphere presented around the form of selection process that is shown in both stories and how this atmosphere can change the view of the reader. First off, the authors of both stories introduce some sort of tradition that must be carried out, for both of the stories it is a selection process. Prohibition was an amendment that caused the ban of alcohol and anything related to it. America was suffering because of alcohol, so prohibition was enforced. Little did the country know, prohibition would cause America to suffer far more. America was facing various problems due to alcohol such as death, crime, and loss of money. America expected to solve these problems by banning alcohol; never did the country expect the problems to worsen.

In the story, "The Lottery," Tessie Hutchinson thinks that the lottery is unfair. The lottery took place on June 27 and was supposed to be every villager's main focus. However, Tessie Hutchinson not only forgot about the lottery, but was late to it, which was unusual. After the family heads draw a slip of paper and open them, Bill has "got it." In Victoria, the cost to the Justice system was 26 million dollars and in the Health Sector the government spends a further 37.5 million a year in treatment programs designed to combat problem gambling. The ‘Office of Economic and Statistical Research’ reported that the expenditure involved in the treatment of health issues arising from gambling was at an estimated 400 million. These health issues such as depression and anxiety are attributed to many gamblers. Dr Mark Zirnzack, from InterChurch Gambling Taskforce responded to the inquiry into the cost of gambling.
Prohibition: Why Did America Change Its Mind? Al Capone once said “ Prohibition has done nothing but trouble”. Ending the manufacture and transport of alcohol will only make situations worse. After the 18th Amendment was passed, the manufacture and sale of alcoholic beverages in the U.S. was illegal.
Police believes they don’t have to respect people of color ,and think it 's okay to mistreat them instead. The officers been discriminating people of color because they assume every african american are criminal and bad. They harass people of color just to make them feel intimidate. The police kill innocent black people and don 't get charged guilty at all. There’s three side of people which is the people who get affected by it, the people who overlooks it, and the people who just don 't care.
Prohibition’s Failure In the 1920s, Al Capone was a name that inspired fear into the hearts of all of Chicago. His reign as crime boss over Chicago came because of a single government act. This act was the Eighteen Amendment of the Constitution of the United States of America, commonly known as Prohibition. The common goal for the law was that alcohol related crime would go down and the problems of drunks who did not take care of or provide for their families would be eradicated.
As Americans, the citizens of the United States take a deep pride in our freedoms of a democracy. Throughout the history of this great nation, the inhabitants of the United States of America have taken to arms, protested and revolted against enemies; and even each other. One such paramount of history that sets the United States of America apart from that of other countries are the documents known as the Constitution of the United States of America. The aforementioned documents are the backbone of American law and justice; both ensuring a law by which all citizens are bound to, as well as, ensuring the freedoms of those same citizens. With regards to social issues that portray a side of both that pro and con, a singular amendment comes to mind:
Atlantic City was once the powerhouse of the east coast raking in tourists, large sums of money, and monopolizing the gambling industry. Nick Paumgarten wrote “The Death and Life of Atlantic City”, which states “The casino closures in Atlantic City have contributed to the loss of nearly 10,000 jobs, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics” (102). Four out of the twelve casinos closed which contributed to 8,000 of those jobs. Three of the remaining casinos are currently facing bankruptcy which contributes to the other 2,000 people left jobless. The question Atlantic City is faced with a matter of needing more gambling or less?
In her story "The Lottery", Shirley Jackson implies the negative consequences of blindly following tradition through the acceptance, by the villagers, of the tradition of the lottery. Jackson suggests that the people of the village are afraid to give up the little tradition they have, even if it is not good. Every year after the lottery, the conductor of the lottery, Mr. Summers suggests that they should build a new box but, “No one [likes] to upset even as much tradition as [is] represented by the box.” (Jackson, 1). The black box symbolizes ritual and tradition.
The villagers on “The Lottery” by Shirley Jackson are afraid to let go of their tradition, the lottery. They are concern of unknown consequences that will happen if they change their old customs. So, for every year, the villagers gather at the square to do the lottery at 10 AM . The villagers are afraid to quit their outdated tradition because they think that changing their old customs will only bring trouble.
