Is withholding information the same as lying? Most people would say yes and in the Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, Huckleberry is notorious to lie and deceive specifically to his partner Jim. Mark Twain the author of the Adventures of Huckleberry Finn shows how Huck’s and Jim’s relationship with one another is filled with a power struggle of lies and deceit. These lies positively develop the relationship between Huck and Jim by making character’s have regrets and correct their directions for the future.
One of the reasons Huck lies is for his desires. One being to have fun “I killed him, and curled him up on the foot of Jim's blanket, ever so natural, thinking there'd be some fun when Jim found him there.” (Twain 39). In this scene Huck places …show more content…

“Dat truck dah is trash; en trash is what people is dat puts dirt on de head er dey fren's en makes 'em ashamed.” (Twain 65). Jim response to Huck’s prank made Huck feel regret for lying to Jim about where he really was. The apology afterwards allows for Huck and Jim to be more honest for each other. Huck considers telling off Jim to return him back to slavery. “Dah you goes, de ole true Huck; de on'y white genlman dat ever kep' his promise to ole Jim. Well, I just felt sick.”(Twain 67). This shows Jim responds by saying things to make Huck feel guilty. This is significant because it furthers their relationship by helping Huck realize he truly cares about Jim. Although Huck doesn’t notice this is a lie, he thinks it over and comes to view Jim as a friend.
Huck is constantly trying to protect Jim and does so by lying to Jim to prevent conflict. “What was the use to tell Jim these warn't real kings and dukes? It wouldn't a done no good; and, besides, it was just as I said: you couldn't tell them from the real kind” (Twain 117).
