Lincoln’s progression from destitute poverty to becoming the 16th president of the United States is a remarkable accomplishment. Combined with tragic losses and the absence of thorough education, Lincoln’s motivation, a willingness to do something, allowed him to persevere through these unprecedented obstacles that cemented certain characteristics into his persona. One of the most influential traits that Lincoln demonstrated was his motivation. Traits like this one built and shaped his melancholy temperament and his aspiration to achieve greater things as a child. The ability to lead is a quality that many people try to emulate. However, the ability to lead is not a trait that people are born with, it is shaped by the dozens of events that occur during that leaders life, in turn shaping the way they want to pilot a nation. One of the reasons Lincoln had such a strong drive to achieve was because of his upbringing. From an early age, Lincoln was considered gifted and naturally strong minded. He was able to read very well and orate at a level much higher than that of his peers. His level of intelligence enabled him to strengthen his leadership qualities. Being mostly self taught and growing up “literally without education,” Lincoln grew older his strive to help and motivate others became bonded even further into his mentality. His drive is stated clearly “When viewed against the failed efforts of his rivals, it is clear that Lincoln won because he was the shrewdest and canniest of them all...displaying a fierce ambition, an exceptional acumen, and a wide range of emotional strengths.”Lincoln’s drive to achieve this greatness is important because if he had given up and not persisted. It allowed him to continue through the tremendous amount of emotional and physical objects that held him back. His optimism even when failure seemed evident is clearly shown in a particular passage “ His unwillingness to abandon the policies he had championed became self destructive stubbornness.” This exemplifies his drive to prolong certain ideas that might not have been favored, even if it affected him negatively. The loss of several people in his family at a young age, shaped him into developing optimism. One of the most important events that shows Lincoln’s ability to have optimism is shown during several elections where he chose to run for congress, presidency, and other government jobs. Through many of these elections, Lincoln lost by great margins. Lincoln was quoted saying, “After being defeated 5 or 6 times, I would then feel disgraced never try it again.” This showed that even if h did not succeed at first and failure stood in his way, he would continue to persevere until his efforts were exhausted.
