Literalry Devices In The Lottery “The lottery” is a story about townspeople entering in a lottery but the reward is death. This lottery is something that occurs every year in the village. Everyone has to participate in it. They call it a tradition that has been going on forever. In this tradition there are two rounds. The first round the parents or man of the family pick one ticket for the family. There is one ticket with a black dot on it. This is where the second round comes in. Whoever drew the ticket with the black dot is in the second round and there family is also. Everyone in the family gets a slip of paper and one of the slips has a black dot on it. They pick a slip and carefully open it...the one that has the dot on it is stoned to death. Jackson also tells us that the way the village is forming around the stool is somewhat unusual because the kids come which you wouldn't think kids need to come to a lottery in the first place but then everyone is avoiding the stool in front, like they’re scared of it or something.
