Commitment V. Loyalty
The Crucible is a play based on lies and deceit, but there are also moments where integrity is shown. The Crucible is written by Arthur Miller, this play depicts certain events that occurred during the Salem witch trials. In this play characters are willing to do whatever it takes to get what they want, even if it leads to the downfall of others. Abigail’s horrendous lies are what causes most of the characters downfalls. Within the play commitment v. loyalty is shown a numerous amount of times. For example, John Proctor displays a lack of commitment to his wife Elizabeth Proctor when he commits adultery, however Abigail's followers show their loyalty by following her every move, and John proves to be loyal to his peers …show more content…

Not only does John’s lack of commitment affect his relationship, but it also takes a toll on other things vital to the Salem witch trials. John and Elizabeth have to answer a series of questions by Ezekiel Cheever to make sure there is no act of witchcraft in their house. When Cheever asks John the ten commandments his guilt takes over and he forgets the sixth commandment, John needs help from Elizabeth to figure out the last commandment he is missing. Along with John’s guilt devouring him, he also puts his wife Elizabeth in danger because of Abigail’s absurd infatuation with him. John decides to hang because he knows it would be the right thing to do since he is already carrying a sin. John starts to think about his loyalty and integrity and decides that it is only right if he hangs because the people that hanged before him could have been sinless. Even though John and Elizabeth want to be together John could not live knowing that his integrity is demolished and also knowing that people died already for standing up for what is is right and not backing down. In the end John hangs for his sin but keeps his integrity. John is very loyal to his peers and stands up for what he knows is
