“I never lie because I don’t fear anyone. You only lie when you’re afraid,” said John Gotti. Lying is just one of the things Abigail Williams has done to save herself throughout Arthur Millers play The Crucible. The Crucible takes place during the Salem, Massachusetts witch trials in 1662 where many innocent Puritans were being falsely accused of witchcraft and killed. It was a time when those who told the truth died and those who lie. Lived In the play The Crucible, Arthur Miller suggests that when people are in fear they will do anything to avoid it.
Midway through ACT 1 Abigail and her friends are being suspected of witchcraft. At some point after they figured out they might get in trouble, the girls were all in a room with Betty and she started crying and yelling about what happened. In hysteria Abigail slapped Betty and yelled: ” Now look you. All of you. We danced. And Tituba conjured Ruth Putnam’s dead sisters. And that is all. And mark this. After a few court cases she finally “confessed” but instead of telling the truth, she lied and threw many people under the bus: “ I want the light of god, I want the sweet love of Jesus! I danced for the devil; I saw him, I wrote in his book; I go back to Jesus; I kiss his hand. I saw Sarah Good with the devil; I saw Goody Osbourne with the devil; I saw Bridget Bishop with the devil!” (Miller 48) If someone confesses to witchcraft they’d get to live but in a way she came out as a “victim” and blamed people like Sarah and Osbourne.
