The Power of Manipulation: The Dark Side of This Common Word Have you ever felt like you were being controlled or used? Have you ever felt like you were being lied to for someone to get what they want? Maybe you didn’t even realize it was happening. If you have ever found yourself in this situation, you were probably being manipulated. Manipulation is the act of controlling or influencing a person or situation cleverly, unfairly, or unscrupulously.
Through harsh rejection and preposterous delusions, Abigail Williams abused her good name and became the fault for the bitter ends of many for something they were not guilty of. I have reread significant sections of The Crucible several times and have read and analyzed it to the best of my ability on multiple occasions. Once reading this book in my Honors English Course at the number one high school in the state of California, we carefully analyzed the characters, going as far as even making character charts, to understand them and their intentions much better. The Salem witch trials were series of hearings of people getting accused of witchcraft in Massachusetts, which lasted from February 1692 to May 1693. During these times, anyone who was accused of being a ‘witch’ or suspected of ‘practicing witchcraft’ was sentenced to death or hanged. The trials resulted in the death of twenty people, fourteen of them women, and all but one some by hanging. The witch trials was full of hysteria which caused a lot of chaos, death and accusations in the town of Salem, Massachusetts. In the Arthur Miller’s book The Crucible, the main character Abigail Williams is to blame for the 1692 Salem witch trials in Massachusetts.
Abigail is the person to blame for the Salem Witch Trials in Arthur Miller’s play, The Crucible. Abigail is a seventeen year old girl. Her uncle, Reverend Parris the minister of Salem in 1692, took her in after her parents were killed by Native Americans. Throughout the story, she fights for John Proctor. Proctor and Abigail have had an affair that very few know about.

Miller wrote it as an allegory to the Red Scare, the promotion of fear of a potential rise of communism. Miller himself was blacklisted for refusing to testify in front of the HUAC, a committee that was created to investigate any person who might be a communist.

In the views of many, there is a fear, superstition, or any personal beliefs are key ways to twist the thoughts of someone or something. In The Crucible, Abigail was able to use the superstition and fear of witches against the town of Salem to manipulate them into turning against one another, faking that she was capable of scouting witches and their spirits, while she accused many so she will have a way to get rid Elizabeth while maintaining innocence. Abigail was a very strange girl but, her name was white as snow in the town of Salem, proving that she will still have a way to actually have no reason that anybody won’t believe her.
Abigail Williams is not your typical teenage girl. She is a girl that will drink blood to kill someone, accuse people of witchcraft, and have a affair. By looking at The Crucible, one can see that Abigail Williams develops the theme of reputation, which is important because people who fear losing their reputation spread hysteria. Protecting her reputation motivates Abigail Williams to accuse others of being a witch.
