I think that the crucible begins some supernatural manifestation, but that is pure mass hysteria. At first They were summoning spirits, but later on, it was just an act. In the first scene, it says that Parris finds Betty, Tituba, Abigail, and other girls dancing in the forest. They all try to summon the devil and try to play it off. Abigail wanted Tituba to ask the devil because she wants Elizabeth, john proctors wife dead, but she doesn’t tell Parris. Mary also says to the group that she sent Ruth with them to see why her seven babies died days after and who was cursing her. Also, Mary Warren tells Reverend Hale that her daughter, Ruth, hasn't eaten but like I said they just want to fake it to hide what happened. I also think both Betty and Ruth try to hide it because they don't want to embarrass the name of their families, especially Paris because he's a reverend and also has a crucial title in town and has many enemies around him that dislike him and want to take him off that position. I believe their parents also thought that they were faking because Betty had her eyes closed and Ruth's eyes were open and ruth will walk but can't hear or talk. Abigail tries to wake up Betty, and she wakes up crying then she blames Tituba that she was the one to make them do witchcraft. John Proctor comes To save her, but after seeing that John rejects Abigail and prefers his wife, she also blames him for witchcraft put in prison. Later, Elizabeth comes in and tries to convince John to say that he was also involved with the Devil, he agrees, and the court makes him sign on paper of him accepting his charge, but seeing that he put his name in jeopardy he rips the paper and later he is hanged. It feels like he dies with dignity and not lying about something he didn't do and before he even is sent to you also confesses that he had an affair with Abigail so if you that John was hung free of charge because he had admitted what he had done. But before John died, he told Danforth that his wife Mary Warren was pregnant, and he tried to convince him to give her more time to live. danforth gave Mary Warren time until she gave birth. He also tries to convince that Mary Warren is innocent and then for sure bring her to testify, but when he does, he also brings the other girls and the girls went against her and lied that she was bewitching
