Joseph Stalin killed over an estimated 30 million people unrelated to war. This was the result of communism in the Soviet Union. Communism is an economic system where advocating class war and leading to a society in which all property is publicly owned and each person works and is paid according to their abilities and needs. Communism is considered a bad thing because it makes every person almost exactly the same. Every person in communist societies gets made the same by force for economic reasons. The Giver, directed by Phillip Noyce, portrays communism by showing food rationing, showing how all of the people are equal, and showing how kids can only learn certain subjects.
The Soviet Union was a communist country from 1922 to 1991 and they were extremely materialistic. In the Soviet Union the government wanted everyone to have the same exact clothes brands, bikes, cars, and houses. Almost every aspect of the societies in the Soviet Union were the same. Every single person in this society is almost a clone of the one right next to them, and the only person that is different is Jonas and the receiver. In The Giver there is rationing for every meal, but they are allowed to have some snacks in their house if allowed to. At each meal they go to a machine in their house and hit a button and their food comes out. In the giver none of the kids are taught any sort of history and they aren’t taught any sort of literature either because they do not want them learning anything that would change their outlook on the society. That’s why they have one receiver of memory who knows what actually knows everything about the World.
