Ms. Brandi Powell 3/18/24 Who’s Fault is it: Romeo and Juliet It’s pretty clear that Romeo and Juliet are both clearly too unstable to be blamed for their deaths because they threaten to kill themselves several times, and get married within 12 hours of having known each other, most of which were asleep. If they never met, no one would have died. So the only other person to be blamed is Mercutio. Mercutio didn’t have the idea to go to the party where Romeo and Juliet met, but he did say that Romeo should dance, which caused Romeo and Juliet to meet and this whole bloody mess to start.
Who is most responsible for the death of Romeo & Juliet in my opinion is Mercutio because he started the full argument between the families. Mercurtio should be blamed for the death of Romeo and Juliet because he had to stick his nose in Romeo and Tybalt's business. Mercutio and Tybalt because he called him a King of Cats and it is nothing but one of his 9 lives so Tybalt draws his sword. Romeo goes to stop them and Tybalt stabs Mercutio and kills him. Mercurio states, “I am hurt. A plague o' both your houses! I am sped. Is he gone, and hath nothing?” (Romeo and Juliet 3.1.90-92)
Romeo is to blame for Mercutio’s death in Act III of Romeo and Juliet. First of all, Romeo did not fight back when Tybalt insulted him. Tybalt calls Romeo a villain and other various names, but Romeo responds by saying (paraphrase), “I love you more than you believe for we are family, even if you are oblivious to this fact. I love the name Capulet as much as I love my own name”(3.1.72-75). When Romeo says this, Tybalt becomes confused and enraged.
So therefore Mercutio is responsible for the whole entire thing that went on in the play. Mercutio is also the most to blame for the events that occur in Romeo and Juliet because he told Romeo to go with him to the Capulet’s party and crash it. Romeo says “Give me a torch.”
In The Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare there are several characters that may be responsible for the tragedy. Though, while reading the story, a reader may come to the conclusion that Mercutio is truly responsible for the tragedy, because of his involvement in Romeo meeting Juliet. Mercutio is truly responsible for Romeo and Juliet's death, because he tried to coerce Romeo into going to a capsule party even as a montague and succeeded. After being rejected by Rosaline, Romeo is very sad, and upon seeing this Mercutio has an idea to cheer him up going to a party with him. The problem is that they are montagues and their family and the capulets have been feuding for generations.
Mercutio is trying to make Romeo be a person that he is not. Romeo is a very passionate person throughout the play, him having the same view on life and women like Mercutio, Romeo’s demise wouldn’t have made much sense. This action helps build to pushing Romeo away from Mercutio.

The love between the two is the main conflict in the story, as their families loathe each other beyond just slight distaste, causing separation and a type of clandestine relationship necessary between the two to be able to stay lovers. The clash between the two opposing sides involving Mercutio and Tybalt in Shakespeare’s play Romeo and Juliet characterized the masculine codes of honor in Veronese society. The fact of the matter that Mercutio had fought to defend the honor of Romeo’s name suggests a strong sense of honor, courage, and first and foremost loyalty by challenging Tybalt in place of Romeo. In this situation both Tybalt and Mercutio can not make sense of Romeo’s noncompliance in regards to fighting. Mercutio even goes to extent of calling Romeo’s actions, "O calm, dishonorable, vile submission" (3.4.25). Shakespeare has formulated several memorable characters throughout his writings, such as Nurse from The Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet, Lady Macbeth from Macbeth, and Mercutio from Romeo and Juliet. Mercutio is such a memorable character due to his characteristics of being sarcastic and cynical, as well as his major impact on plot development. Mercutio isn’t completely serious though, as he was cracking jokes on his deathbed. Although Mercutio isn’t a Montague, he is good friends with Romeo and takes the side of the Montagues in the war of the opposing families.
My character analysis is on Mercutio, a kinsmen of the prince and a best friend to Romeo, in William Shakespeare’s play, Romeo and Juliet. In the play, Mercutio comes off as being the sarcastic, bipolar, and immature. First, Mercutio first comes off as being sarcastic, because he makes fun of Romeo’s dream about him dying. On the way to the Capulet party that Benvolio invites Romeo to, Romeo talks of a dream that foreshadows his death.
