What is a metaphor? A metaphor is a thing regarded as symbolic or representative to something else. For example: “Stiff collars wilted by nine in the morning”(pg.6)Explanation This metaphor could mean a lot of different things and have many different meanings, one of the things it could stand for is maybe the weather melted the starch on the collars and they were literally wilted like they use it in the book. Another metaphor is “I wanted you to see what real courage is, instead of getting the idea that courage is a man with a gun in his hand” Atticus is talking about an old lady who is a morphine addict. She has the courage to die sober, without the drugs she had depended on for so long. It is a very different type of courage than a man with a gun.
