Knowles delves into the toxic dynamics that can arise in friendships, particularly when one person is striving to be the dominant force. John Knowles utilizes the literary device of symbolism in order to show the theme of man’s inhumanity to others by portraying humans looking to dominate over others for self benefit. Through the microcosm of the school, the novel explores the destructive hierarchies and power struggles within society. One significant example of this is the trial in the Butt Room, where Brinker, the student leader, dominates over Gene, manipulating and pressuring him to falsely confess to a crime by claiming that Gene was “Doing away with his roommate so he could have a whole room to himself”(89). This scene illustrates the destructive nature of power imbalances and the dangers of being controlled by others as Brinker purposely carries on the claim that Gene purposely jounced the branch in order to get his own dorm room which Gene claims that Brinker “rides a joke longer than anybody I[he] knows”(89). This means that Brinker purposely kept on bringing up Gene’s situation with Finny in order to extract information inhumanely, and that Gene was aware. Additionally, the trial in the Assembly Hall where Brinker continues to dominate over Gene, pushing him to falsely confess to a crime he did not commit, highlights the cruel and ruthless nature of manipulation and the lack of empathy that can exist within individuals in which Gene describes him as “enjoying this… imagining himself Justice incarnate… but also blind folded”(168).
