In the book The Great Gatsby money plays a big part throughout the story and is the main theme. Out of all the downfalls Gatsby has, there’s one that stands out the most. Gatsby’s downfall is thinking money can get him anything and take him anywhere he wants.
The 1920s was a time of flamboyance and wealth in the upper class. Jay Gatsby, a man of old money, threw over the top parties, in which he would spend his money very nonchalantly. The ambiance of his parties greatly illustrated the upper class of the time. Fitzgerald makes the reader's conscious of the fact that Dexter and Gatsby weren’t born into “riches” but later on became rich, wealthy men. As they shape into wealthy men, Gatsby and Dexter have all the money they could possibly dream of but as readers I think what we have to remind ourselves is that when growing up they already had this preconceived notion that they were going to be full of wealth and privilege and that was the only thing which was going to make them content. In addition to that, Daisy was the only person that could fulfill Gatsby’s void as well as Dexter’s love
