The book The Great Gatsby, F. Scott Fitzgerald shows how money affects the way people act. Daisy Buchanan falls in love with Gatsby because of his money. We also learn that Gatsby fell in love with Daisy in 1917 when Daisy had a lot of money. Money motivates Gatsby, Daisy and the others to do things that they would not otherwise do. In the novel, money symbolizes lust and greediness because Daisy was not in love with Gatsby. She was just thirsty for his money. Also, the people who went to Gatsby’s parties only went because they wanted a free, good time. In the novel, Fitzgerald shows that love can be influenced by money. A great example of this is when Gatsby had Nick and Daisy over to his house after Gatsby reunites with Daisy after five years. Even after Gatsby throws huge parties for everyone and pays for everything, people did not appreciate it Gatsby was not worried about it because he has enough money to not worry about it. For example, after every party that Gatsby has his servants had to clean up after everyone. “On week-ends his Rolls-Royce became an omnibus, bearing parties to and from the city between nine in the morning and long past midnight, while his station wagon scampered like a brisk yellow bug to meet all trains. And on Mondays eight servants, including an extra gardener, toiled all day with mops and scrubbing-brushes and hammers and garden-shears, repairing the ravages of the night before”(Fitzgerald 43). This quote proved that everyone didn't care how much the parties cost or where the money comes from; all they cared about was not having to pay for the parties. This shows that people are greedy and do not care about how much something cost unless they have to pay for it or they have a lot of
