The Great Gatsby was written by F.Scott Fitzgerald. This book gives the lifestyle of the wealthy during the 1920s, but it challenges the american dream. It shows through the book that the idea of money and fame is all ones need to be happy. Myrtles want to be an upperclass is what lures myrtle to have and affair with Tom Buchanan. Myrtles affair affects her marriage with her husband George and soon leads to her death and her loss of true happiness. Fitzgerald is using this example to show that people dream to be higher class, but the social class is unfair. Myrtle is trapped looking for that comfortable life. Myrtle acts like she belongs with the upper class and talks to her husband in direspect as if she is apart of that upper class crowd “ Beat me ! throw me down and beat me, you dirty little coward” (Fitzgerald 137), after that Myrtle was hit with Daisys car that killed her. This is showing that Myrtle has no respect for her husband. Myrtle and Tom had a talk “ Sometime toward midnight Tom Buchanan and Mrs. Wilson stood face to face, discussing in impassioned voices whether Mrs. Wilson had any right to mention Daisys name…. Wealth, love and happiness, which ties up to the American Dream. Daisy was in a love affair with Gatsby, he was also poor at the time, but tricked daisy in thinking otherwise. After Gatsby was sent away to war, he still remained faithful to her until they met again after five years of not seeing eachother, even though she was still married to tom. Daisy had gatsbys heart “ she only married you because i was poor and she was tired of waiting for me. It was a terrible mistake, but in her heart she loved any one except me!” (Fitzgerald 130) said Gatsby. This shows Daisy only married Tom for his money. Daisy breaks down and cry “ They’re such beautiful shirts it makes me sad because i’ve never seen such beautiful shirts before” (Fitzgerald 92). This is showing how the great value of the shirts overwhelmed her and by being with Gatsby because she now realizes she is much more in love with Gatsby then she is with Tom and she could have waited and married Gatsby since he represents “the new money” and she would of had love too. Daisys chase to the American dream and that ideal man destroyed her
