Who done it? There are three deaths that occur in F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby. And it may seem surprising but there is one person to blame for all three of them. Tom Buchanan is the one who is the most responsible for the deaths of Gatsby, Myrtle Wilson, and George Wilson.
When Myrtle is killed by Daisy, Gatsby is quick to take the blame when Nick questions him about it. For example, Gatsby says, “Yes, but of course I’ll say I was” (Fitzgerald 143). Daisy never thanked Gatsby for taking the blame, this being a perfect example of how much of a powerful effect Daisy had over Gatsby. After Myrtle finishes her story about how she and Tom met she comes face to face with him discussing if Myrtle has any authority to bring up Daisy’s name.
When I finished reading The Great Gatsby, there was a question that lingered, and that question is: Who is responsible for Gatsby’s death? George Wilson has to be the most responsible; he is the one who ultimately pulled the trigger and kills Gatsby. Everyone else had a part to play, but their role in the death is ancillary, related to the cause, but not the primary cause. Some say that one character can’t be held accountable for Gatsby’s death, it has to be multiple. As I said before, I believe this isn’t true, and that George Wilson is responsible.
In the great gatsby some love connection are very weak and some at quite real. Gatsby's love for daisy is real, the way their whole situation went down shows how much his love for daisy wasn't pretend, but for daisy she doesn't love him at all, it's all about living this fake lifestyle. Myrtle and Tom so called love isn't real at all. He’s only with her because he’s getting bored of daisy but everything he is saying is a lie. Though under those circumstances Myrtle's husband George wilson's love for his wife myrtle is very real.

In this quote, Myrtle speaks snobbishly while imagining that she sounds fancy. In this quote, Myrtles’ yearning to become a part of the upper class can be seen very easily. In order to create a false impression of being wealthy, she becomes a complete braggart. In fact, Myrtle talks about how she shouldn’t have married into a lower class, and that she only married Wilson because she thought he was a gentleman. In reality, Myrtle is not part of the upper class at all and lives in a tiny garage in a dusty, forgotten place known as the valley of ashes.
Although he is a contributor to his death, George Wilson and Daisy Buchanan are ultimately who led to his death. Jay Gatsby is a contributor to his own death because he makes bad decisions to get his dream. An example of a bad decision is when he purposely let Nick stay in his guesthouse and be his neighbor. All he was really doing was using Nick for his own personal gain.
Wouldn’t Tom have blamed Gatsby both ways and he would have still died? Yes, but Gatsby’s death would have held a different meaning. The theme of the book could have further expanded to integrity as well as the American dream. After an insightful analysis, it is likely that Gatsby was the driving the car that killed Myrtle due to reoccurring symbols, social norms, and sheer logic.
Even though other characters may have contributed, Gatsby is ultimately responsible for his own death because he wants to please Daisy, he is a liar, and he thinks he can repeat the past. The first reason Gatsby is responsible for his own death is because he did everything to please daisy. Gatsby bought his mansion and nice things to impress daisy. “He took out a pile of shirts and began throwing them one by one before us, shirts of sheer linen and thick silk and fine flannel which lost their folds as they fell and covered the table in many-colored disarray.”

Through Gatsby’s and Myrtle’s actions Fitzgerald illustrates his agreement that someone will look reality straight in the eye and deny it. While in this novel George is to blame for the death of Gatsby, Tom is more at fault for the death of The Great Gatsby because he instigated George to kill Jay Gatsby. In The Great Gatsby there are many people that could be blamed for the death of Jay Gatsby, but the two main characters who ended up directly or indirectly killing Gatsby were undoubtedly George Wilson and Tom

In this alternative ending to The Great Gatsby, the tragic events surrounding Myrtle's death send ripples through the lives of the characters. Daisy, faced with the consequences of her actions, chooses not to return to Gatsby. Tom, continuing his pattern of infidelity, finds another mistress. Amidst these changes, two new characters are introduced, each bringing their own unique perspectives and challenges. As the news of Myrtle's death reaches Daisy, she is overwhelmed with guilt and remorse.
In my opinion, Tom is most responsible for Gatsby’s death. I believe that Tom is most responsible because Tom forgot to tell George that Daisy was the driver of Gatsby’s car the night Myrtle was hit by it. Tom forgot to tell George that because him and Daisy were plotting this out. I could tell something was up when Nick refers that “Tom and Daisy talking in the house(146). I also think that Daisy is a little bit responsible because she took on some bad morals when she hit Myrtle because she could have stopped the car after she hit Myrtle.

In The Great Gatsby, the death of Jay Gatsby is a tragic event that sparks questions about responsibility and accountability. Although George Wilson is the one who pulls the trigger, Gatsby himself was ultimately responsible for his own demise. At first glance, it appears that George Wilson is the root cause of Gatsby's death since, after all, he is the one who pulls the trigger and ends Gatsby's life.
