In a great book everyone needs hope. The characters in this novel often go through struggles and find ways to overcome these struggles. In the novel, “Nectar in a Sieve”, Kamala Markandaya is trying to teach the reader to never lose hope through the struggles. An example is the money they need; And by describing these hardships, Markandaya illustrates how hope can help you overcome tough situations. In the example of the Tannery being built, “Now it is all noise a crowds everywhere, and rude young hooligans idling in the street and dinty bazaars and uncouth behavior and no man thinks of another but schene only for his money.” The quote explains how the tannery is bad by saying it’ll draw bad idiotic people into the nice, quiet, caring village.

When the struggles in the novel get worse hope still flourishes and the family gets stronger. Like when Ira’s husband says “mother-in-law, I intend no discourtesy, but this is no ordinary visit. You gave me your daughter in marriage. I have brought her back to you. She is a barren woman.” an example such as this is a huge attention grabber because a young woman with a husband who doesn't want her and can't have children is not as valuable. When she loses her husband and realizes they can't have children the family learns to deal with this and Rukmani goes to see Kenny to see if he can help with Ira. They keep the hope that Ira might be able to have children one day. Kunthi accuses Rukmani of adultery with Kenny. Another example is when Rukmani was coming back from a visit with Kenny, Kunthi and Rukmani bumped into each other. Kunthi insinuates that Rukmani is out late because she has been with Kenny. Rukmani dismisses her by saying her reasons for being out late,
