“I am one of the few honest people I have ever met." (Fitzgerald 59) This is what the protagonist of The Great Gatsby, Nick Carraway says about himself. Within the first few pages of the book, the author tries to relate to the reader that Nick has strong morals, and is an honest young man. In F. Scott Fitzgerald's The Great Gatsby the only honest and respectable character is Nick Carraway. The first part of proving the above statement is showing that Nick is an honest character. There are many examples throughout The Great Gatsby. On page 59 Nick calls himself one of the few honest people he has ever met. Anyone might be hesitant to trust Nick’s word about himself. Even without Nick telling the reader about his honesty the reader can still find examples of other characters seeing it in him. “I thought you were rather an honest, straightforward person. I thought it was your secret pride" (Fitzgerald 177). says Nick’s love Jordan Baker. Jordan sees Nick as a strong and honest character with strong morals. Towards the end of the book after Gatsby’s death, Nick sees Tom on the street. Even after all that Tom did Nick still had the moral strength to shake his hand and be done with him. When Gatsby introduces readers to his business connection Meyer Wolfsheim, the man who rigged the 1919 World Series, it is obvious to the reader that Gatsby isn’t as honest and ethical as the readers first thought. "When Wolfsheim learns that Gatsby is an army hero with Oxford connections he realizes that he can use him as a front man in his illegal operations. (Lehan). Gatsby’s connections with Wolfsheim and his questionable past prove that he is a dishonest character, but what about some of the other characters in The Great
