Why Nonviolence Works Non-violence can be just as effective or more effective as compared to violence. Mohandas Gandhi, Martin Luther King Jr., and Nelson Mandela all used non-violence to stand up for what they believed was wrong, and got many followers to make a change. Their governments were aware of their presence, but they could not do much about it. They did not break any laws. Mohandas Gandhi became a hero of South Africa and led India to independence.

The most well-known examples of peaceful resistance come from the civil rights movement. In his “Letter from a Birmingham Jail,” Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. defends his protests by stating that “injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.” Dr. King’s letter was a response to white men who had called his protests untimely. Dr. King points out that protesting will always be untimely, but that it must be done in order to see change. King was correct.
Nonviolent movements and protests have appeared throughout history, most, if not all, eventually achieving what they set out to go. From Dr. Martin Luther King Jrs.’ March on Washington campaigning for civil rights for African-Americans, to the National American Woman Suffrage Association’s demonstrations for voting rights for women, to British Parliament repealing the Stamp Act due to colonial boycotts on tariffed goods, nonviolence has prevailed in being successful. What can be accomplished via war can also be accomplished via peace. People standing up for what they believe in and demonstrating their beliefs peacefully helps accomplish more than them hurting themselves and each other to try to change things.
An example of this is with the Underground Railroad (Doc A). The Underground Railroad was a network of black and white abolitionists that helped enslaved people escape to the north. Running away was more common, and less risky, than creating a rebellion (Doc A). The Underground Railroad helped around one thousand people escape the institution of slavery each year (Doc A). Another example of nonviolent resistance is Harriet Tupman's work (Document C).
Civil disobedience is the refusal of something in a friendly manner. Politically, America is in a rough situation. America as a whole is slowly separating as a nation. For instance, African-Americans believe they are experiencing prejudice from “white” people. In Baton Rouge, Louisiana there a revolt organized by the infamous “Black Lives Matter” organization.

If one uses this method because he is afraid or merely because he lacks the instruments of violence, he is not truly nonviolent. This is why Gandhi often said that if cowardice is the only alternative to violence, it is better to fight. "He also states “any law that degrades human personality is unjustifiable” By using these examples, King shows that nonviolent resistance is a legitimate and effective means of achieving change.
Using nonviolent resistance does not include killing off anyone that doesn’t share the same opinion, it is simply protesting to prove and persuade a need for change. Also, peacefully protesting attracts attention from all over the world; thus, educating more people about a serious issue in society. If no one takes action, no one will realize the problem and it’ll only continue to grow. Also, many political leaders such as Mahatma Gandhi, Rosa Parks, and Martin Luther King, Jr. are extremely known for their delightful use of civil disobedience. Even better, all of them were successful in bringing about a change in society.
