Standing alone under a bright full moon at the edge of a dock one can certainly dream, infinitely, of possibilities beyond reality. Dreams are precious and Colin Powell, sheds lights on the fact that dreams do not come easy through the quote of his “A dream doesn't become reality through magic; it takes sweat, determination and hard work”. (Powell). People have been striving to achieve success since the dawn of time and more so this idea known as “The American Dream”. According to the website Investopedia, the very definition of the American Dream is: “The American Dream is the belief that anyone, regardless of where they were born or what class they were born into, can attain their own version of success in a society where upward mobility is possible for everyone”. …show more content…

However, even with hard work there are still common obstacles that get in the way of the American Dream. A few obstacles that often stand in the way of achieving the American Dream are money, circumstances that are out of one’s control and people. Not everyone achieves their dreams, these obstacles are often the reasons why most dreams are just dreams and fail to become a reality.
Jay Gatsby, a well made man who had it all, earned his entire fortune and lived the life of the party but still failed to grab hold of his American Dream simply because of other people. In the novel The Great Gatsby, by F. Scott Fitzgerald, Gatsby had one dream and one dream only, to have Daisy. For years upon years Gatsby dreamed of ending up with Daisy, but was blind in love. He failed to see that his dream would never happen because it was already behind him, that his dream was already in the past.
