Was Odysseus a Hero? The Odyssey is a story of a Greek hero’s journey home from war. He and his crew set sail from Troy to get home to Ithaca. They have many setbacks on their journey and in the end he loses all of his men. Odysseus has to get home in time before his wife marries another man. After 20 years he finally makes it home to his wife and they live a happy life. Odysseus, in most cases can be described as a hero.
Odysseus is a hero because he is smart and thinks things through. One point he shows his smarts is when he thinks of the trojan horse. “See now what the bold man did and dared in the Wooden Horse, where we all were hidden, the best men of the army, to bring death and ruin upon Troy!” (Homer 50) This is describing Odysseus coming up with the plan to build the trojan horse to sneak into troy and kill everyone. This makes it clear that Odysseus, although a little flawed, is a hero, because he goes out of his way just to save his crew and gets nothing in return.
So the debate on whether Odysseus is a hero or not is very debatable. Even though it's a very debatable topic your can say that he is Smart, he’s trying to get home to save his wife from the unwanted suitors, and that he is as loyal as can be to his crew and will do almost anything to save them. Everything good he does outweighs the bad that he has done, which what I have proven makes him a
