Something about Odysseus that makes his stories relevant today is his actions and dedication. In the epic, The Odyssey by Homer, translated by Robert Fitzgerald, shows several examples of conflicts. The Hero’s Journey pattern remain consistent because majority of today’s movies, books, etc are based off of those steps. Odysseus had to do things that people go through and that they do today. Some examples are, disputing against the Cyclops, traveling through the Land of the dead, fighting in the Trojan War, and more critical situation that happened in the epic. Maybe not as bizarre or unrealistic ,but it has the same outcome on someone. Although in book 16 The Cyclops Odysseus and his group of men suffer many losses, him and the rest of his men continued to sail back home. This is relevant today because it shows the readers that even from thousands and thousands of years ago, people still had to keep fighting for peace in order to get what they want, which is to be reunited with their families back home in Ithaca. Odysseus was extremely brave on how on he put his life in danger. For an example is from book 11 The Land of the Dead Odyssey life was at risk when he entered the land of the dead, following Circe’s instructions. “Odysseus and his crew set out for the land of the dead. They arrive and find the place to which Circe has directed them.” (Homer 388). This is significant today because Odysseus also risked his life when he was deciding either to pass the six headed monster, Scylla or go through the gigantic whirlpool, Charybdis. His decision to pass Scylla and loss six men instead all of them was a logical choice as leader.
