Money lets people buy stuff and make them feel good about having things. Old money is money that people inherit from their parents/ ancestors, Tom is from an old money family. New money is money that you earn for yourself and you don’t get any money from your family. Gatsby gets his money from the selling of illegal alcohol and his ties to the mob.Gatsby falls in love with Daisy, but the thing is that she is married to Tom Buchanan. F. Scott Fitzgerald uses The Great Gatsby to propose that money is a great thing but it has a darkside to it. It allows you to buy stuff like cars, clothes, and etc but you can’t buy happiness.

Another example is when Nick meets the girl that Wilson is with and Tom does things with her while he gets cars fixed up. There are other things Fitzgerald are trying to emphasize with money. For example Gatsby got all this money to one day get back with Daisy, but everyone knows you can’t buy love you make it. Nick says you can't repeat the past but you can move forward. Gatsby didn’t care what Nick said and decided to ignore him and that didn’t work out well for Gatsby. Dan Cody taught Gatsby to be a gentleman and to speak and act the part of being wealthy. When Dan Cody died Gatsby was expecting to inherit all of Dan Cody’s money, but Dan Cody’s family said that he could not have it. Then Gatsby joined the army and then fell in love with Daisy and wanted to marry her, but knowing that he didn’t have enough money to do so he turned to the illegal side of things to get money. Gatsby did bootlegging and other things to earn money so that one day he could return to Daisy and give her the life she deserves.
This helped Gatsby acquire the american dream, but it also lead to the fall of Gatsby. Gatsby had it all the money, fame, and the girl but that girl was married. So what happened was Daisy was driving Gatsby car and she mistakenly hit Myrtle and she died. Then Tom Myrtle's husband shoots Gatsby in the head by his pool because he thought that Gatsby killed Myrtle.
