The outsiders are a famous youth book that grasps youth attention in relation to the real world. The debatable factor of the book is if its optimistic or pessimistic? The complete theme of the book is optimistic. The book takes you through the journey of a hard life, but stipulates the ways you want to live it. For example, even though the gang knows that they have it rough, they accept it. Instead of giving up they climb on the journey of loyalty, friendships, and trust to stay together. Optimism is looking at the glass half full, and realizing that life had wonderful things to offer. It's important to look at the protagonist for the most imperative tone of the book. Ponyboy, the main character himself depicts a much more optimistic side, while his side characters decrease into many different groupings. Ponyboy finds a letter from Johnny with the words, "You still have a lot of time to make yourself whatever you want, there is still a lot of good in the world." The gang and everybody knows that life is rough. There always jumped, harassed, treated poorly, and never get fair share. Overtime they realize that nothing is ever going to change. Take the quote "Easy Ponyboy they ain't gonna hurt you again. I know I said but, the ground began to blur and I felt hot tears running down my face." Ponyboy knows that the Socs are gone but, he is still afraid of anyone coming back and hurting him. When someone finally realizes that all the fighting is useless and no one ever gets anything out of it, by then it's nearly too late. Randy had lost his best buddy Bob and couldn't take it anymore. Because of what started with a fight, Johnny was dying and little did anybody know but, Dally was about to kill himself too.
