What is an outcast in a novel? An outcast in a novel is someone who is not accepted by their peers. People usually see them as very different, and they cannot relate to those differences the outcasts give them. Lennie, Crook’s, and Curley’s wife are the outcasts in the novel “Of Mice and Men.” In the story “Of Mice and Men “, Curley’s wife is an outcast. First, Curley’s wife has no friends on the farm, she became lonely and wants to talk to people on the farm (86). Curley’s wife become’s an outcast by no one talking to her, so Curley’s wife becomes lonely and walks around the farm looking for a conversation. The boss of the ranch would beat up Crook’s if he was mad. Crook’s would take the beatings. Taking the beatings the boss gave Crook’s made him an outcast by not fighting back. Furthermore, Crook’s is the only person that live’s in his buckhouse (68). By living alone in a big bunkhouse made Crook’s and outcast by not socializing or living with other people on the ranch. First of all, Lennie visits and talks to other outcasts in the novel and goes to their bunkhouses (67). Lennie fits in with the other two outcasts in the book. Those are the only two people on the ranch Lennie can relate to. In addition, Men go after after him after he murdered Curley’s wife (105). The men do not claim or like Lennie so went after him instead protecting as they would if he was a true member of the rancher’s family.
