The story of Fahrenheit 451 and the way that its society has developed into one that focuses on pleasure and minimizes pain reveals a striking fact. That is that a society built the idea of minimizing pain and focusing on pleasure is self-destructive and can not last. It lacks the core foundation of a modern society, which is emotion and literature. It will eventually destroy itself and all of the people with it. The self destructive nature is made clear in how the society of Montag’s world works. The people live off only pleasure, and experience no other emotions, or simply are unable too. Basic human emotions are ground work for any functional society in modern times or the past, but in the world of Fahrenheit 451, the only emotion is pleasure and the people go to extremes to get it too. For examples the teenagers in this world are constantly driving recklessly everywhere at high speeds, killing other people, and running over animals all for the thrill and pleasure of doing so. Everybody seems to lack empathy for anything, this lack of empathy is made clear in the teenagers, and clearly in Mildred as she turns in her husband to the firemen without any remorse. She did not care about Montag, but the money he brought home so she could have her TVs. Seeing how much empathy is lacking in the citizens, it is not surprising that a nuclear war broke out, as most likely the diplomats or politicians also lacked emotions. This lack of emotion would allow the leaders to go to war without a second thought, as they simply lack the emotions to care about others in their own country or the world. " If a person has a mental break down in reaction to experiencing poetry and the slight discount it brought by causing the them to think, and feel, then imagine when a place is struck by a natural disaster. The lack of empathy from anybody, and that the people would most likely have a mental breakdown in response to the extreme discomfort. This combination would lead to mass casualties, and the lack of empathy would lead to next to no relief
