Laurel Ulrich’s A Midwifes Tale is a book over Marth Ballard who was a New England women living in America. Ulrich uses Marth Ballard diary entries along with other historical documents from the eighteenth century to show her audience the life of women specifically a midwife in the American society, and the sexual standards that were present during the eighteenth century. Martha Ballard the wife of Ephraim Ballard was midwife during the eighteenth century in Hallowell, who not only played the role of a midwife in the society, but also the role of a wife and a mother. Ulrich starts to book by talking about scarlet fever epidemic that had taken places in Hallowell during the summer of 1787. During the time of the fever and after the epidemic had ended, Martha played the role of an important member in the community, even though the social structure in Hallowell was giving more importance to male doctors.
His awareness about what could be versus what is cause him more and more heartache every moment. On top of this The Giver begins to transfer “the painful memories” to Jonas where he learns “physical and emotional pain experienced through injury, loss, grief, rage, and cruelty” (Zirkle). He goes through “suffering” and “even Violence” when he receives a memory of a dying soldier on a battlefield (Chamberlain). He also commented that people had said that she asked for release, the memories were transmitted to the citizens, leaving them with pain and anger, also the giver was left with a little sadness and anger too. Jonas as a character shows bravery or courage throughout the story in many different ways. To begin, he shows bravery and courage because he was told that he was able to take on what no one else in the Community could. Lois Lowry states in the novel, “‘But you will be faced, now,’ she explained gently, with pain of a magnitude that none of us here could comprehend because it is beyond our experience”(63).Lois also wrote, “‘But we feel certain that you are brave,’ she said to him”(63). These quotes are saying that they think that he is brave enough to face the pain of a magnitude or extent that only he and the Giver could understand because they in the Givers case was the receiver or in Jonas’s case is the

Sometimes having to choose something can be difficult, but is a necessary skill in life. Conformity restricts you from having the option to choose, which in some cases can be bad.
The Giver Hero’s Journey "A hero is someone who has given his or her life to something bigger than oneself." Joseph Campbell. Jonas from Lois Lowry’s The Giver makes that example true by making the choice to fight against the community. While his journey might differ slightly from what is considered an orthodox Hero’s Journey, he still has a journey consisting of steps and goals.
As he believes that everyone choosing is bad but also thinking that choosing is important. After Jonas received the memory of war he “did not want to go back. He didn't want the memories, didn't want the honor, didn't want the wisdom, didn't want the pain. He wanted his childhood again, his scraped knees and ball games”(121). So Jonas is starting to push back and drift away from his society.
Even though some memories were so bad Jonas still strongly believed that memories have great meaning, and he believes they’re a part of life not just an image of the past. The elders believe that if The Giver transmitted memories to everyone, it would cause a different way of living, Jonas believes in a much better way, but the elders are insecure about it. Jonas implored The Giver to do something about memories being known to everyone that he and The Giver made a stealthy plan for Jonas to escape and hopefully the memories would be known to everyone. So one day Jonas defied the rules and escaped the community, he believed it was his destiny to escape the community and share memories of the past with everyone. Jonas endured the hard escape from the community passing expansive landscapes.
Debate-written Assignment, Conformity The idea of conformity is to eliminate individualism and to unite the society together, making it a safer place for the citizens to live, and develop in. A place that has no war, no hunger and no pain, where citizens create strong bonds between each other. Mark Dendy’s dance drum is a dance that only uses about six dancers who dance to the beat of African Drums. The dance structure seemingly is fast these dancers don’t stay in one specific spot they seem to move all throughout twirling around and moving with the beat. It doesn’t seem to stop one beat and always moves with the beat. The rhythm of these beats seems to be even with every step the dancer takes constructing a beautiful type of movement. The dance changes over the time of course by showing the way the dancer embracing their sense of understanding dance and how it works and what can become of it.
Outline Imagine being chosen a job for a lifetime, but this job had a lot of pain, and loneliness. Well that what it was like for Jonas. Which makes Jonas being selected to be the receiver of memory is more like a punishment than an honor. Jonas has to deal with the pain that comes from the memories. He is missing out on things others can do.
In Jonas’s society memories are held by one person, The Giver. The Giver is selected by The Committee of Elders after being observed very closely; The Giver is the one who holds all the pain so the people of the community don't have to feel them. According to the novel, the narrator states, “‘Jonas was identified as a possible Receiver many years ago. We have observed him meticulously. There were no dreams of uncertainty”’(Lowry 62).
