“If you are going through hell, keep going.” Perseverance is a steady persistence; it is a course of action, especially in spite of difficulties, obstacles, or discouragement. In The Great Gatsby, the protagonist displayed tremendous persistence in pursuing the woman of his dreams. In many cases, perseverance is a positive quality. However, in the case of Gatsby, pursuing Daisy became an obsession. Gatsby did not grow up with a lot of money and as a young man he saw Daisy with a wealthy man and from that point on decided that he would become extremely wealthy and live a life of indulgence. This showed how Gatsby’s character would stop at nothing to get what he wanted. Gatsby wanted Daisy and he felt that wealth would give him a better chance at getting her. Gatsby never stopped pursuing Daisy even when he knew she was a married woman. He still continued to have an affair with her. It was this affair that resulted in Daisy’s husband, Tom, jealousy that led to Gatsby’s tragic death. Hamlet showed perseverance in a different way. Some may have seen Hamlet as a procrastinator, but Hamlet demonstrated some strong moral attributes. He procrastinated to avoid making mistakes and spending time perfecting his plan. He also didn’t want to hurt anyone while executing his plan to avenge his father’s killer. Throughout the story Hamlet never lost sight of his goal in avenging his father’s death, which demonstrated his perseverance. Even though Hamlet was sorrowful over his father’s death, he keeps in mind his moral beliefs and sets out to right what he sees as a wrong doing towards his father, and ultimately his family. He continued to protect his father even after death by forbidding his mother to marry his uncle that killed his father. Hamlet was successful in avenging his
