Perseverance is defined as persistence in doing something despite difficulty or delay in achieving success. Perseverance is tenacity, indefatigability, the ability to continue in the face of hardship. Most importantly: perseverance is not easy. It is human nature to travel on the beaten path, to do whats easy to avoid stress and strain. Perseverance goes against comfort and leaves you stranded in a battered and barren wasteland with only your determination to guide you. Perseverance is both in line and going against human nature, but that complexity is what makes it such an innately human quality. The protagonists of the story are the Finch family: a father, daughter and son living in the fictional town of Maycomb, Alabama in the 1930s. The character that is most often focused on is Atticus Finch, the underdog lawyer and devoted father, but he is certainly not the only prime example of perseverance in To Kill a Mockingbird. Instead it is imperative to focus on the traits showcased by his son, Jem. Jeremy Finch ages from ten to thirteen throughout the course of the novel, his character development and sudden increase in maturity coming in the latter half of the story. Jem, in his pursuit of becoming a man, matures into quite the young activist, especially during To Kill a Mockingbirds climax. Jem, although raised a polite young man, defies the ruling of his father often. Though at face value this can be taken as contemptuous disobedience or hormonal angst with pubescence, Jems insubordination is much more and should not be discredited. In writing this, I look back at hard times in my life when I chose to stick it out. From the approximate age of twelve I developed a condition doctors can only define as Vasovagal Syncope: a phenomenon that causes spontaneous loss of consciousness in response to certain triggers. I looked out the front windshield at the colorful bus stop ahead and cried. I considered my life over from that day onward, that their is no use in trying any longer. I longed to be rid of the hell that is the weakness of my own body through any means necessary, including the unthinkable. Yet, even through my darkest moments, im still here today against all odds. That is perseverance, that is knowing that to take the easy way out is to have lost.
