My Personal Assessment In preparation to determine what I believe are my personal strengths and weaknesses as a leader, I made a list of experiences where I believe I had to exercise leadership in the past three years. As I was developing the list I determined three areas that are completely different but require leadership. The first is leadership needed within my coursework here at USU. I have had numerous group projects and assignments over the past year which have had varying degrees of success. The second is leadership needed within my everyday relationships. The first was that I feel like I would like to work on developing a stronger and more open first impression with people in groups. This decision stemmed from all three individuals who offered me feedback saying I could work on opening up a little more initially in groups. First impressions are “crucial because they set the stage for future conversations, relationships, and business.” (Fee, 2005, p.1) As I seek to develop my leadership in all aspects of my life, it is important to be able give people positive first impressions. I decided to focus on a specific behavior that I believe is critical in positive first impressions: smiling. Smiling is easy to practice just about anywhere and since people associate happiness and joy with smiling, you will become much more approachable (Hendricks, 2017). Smiling is a simple behavior but something I could work on to appear more open to those I first meet. I needed a way to measure progress and so I decided that I wanted to approach at least three people a day smiling as I start a conversation with them. This will be done with hope that it will eventually become second nature and I will not have to concentrate on smiling on the future. Susan Fee emphasizes the importance of consistency in developing positive first impressions so that you are associated universally with positive traits (Fee, 2005, p.1).Smiling is a trait that I would love to have people associate with me.
