Literary devices provide a brand new depth to texts and stories. There are many literary devices authors use from personification to foreshadowing. Every literary device offers a new sense, a new chemical sent to the reader’s brain. The short story, “Young Goodman Brown” by Nathaniel Hawthorne tells the story of a young man named Goodman Brown walking with an old man through a forest at night. Goodman Brown discovers secrets about all the townspeople and a shocking secret about his wife Faith. The short story concludes with Goodman Brown strolling through the village the morning after and seeing all the townspeople returning to their daily lives. The story of “Young Goodman” Brown shows personification, imagery, and allegory, Hawthorne expands his storytelling by using many literary devices.
