Throughout Catcher in the Rye Holden’s actions, behavior, and thoughts match that of a few certain personality disorders. The most prominent and well sourced disorder is PTSD, Posttraumatic Stress Disorder. The people that are most prone to suffering from this illness are but are not limited to people who have experienced combat exposure, childhood physical abuse, sexual violence, physical assault, being threatened with a weapon, natural disasters, a mugging, plane crash, torture, kidnapping, terrorist attack, life threatening medical diagnosis, or someone who has been in an accident. PTSD does not have an age limitation it affects people of all ages because it could happen to anyone. To prevent possibly being exposed to this illness is impossible in some cases unless you never leave your house, don’t go into the military, never drive a car, or ride in a plane. People are at risk for PTSD even in a public place it is impossible to be truly exempt from attaining this disorder. It also doesn’t take a traumatic experience to have PTSD, even the quick loss of his little brother for Holden can cause PTSD. Symptoms can begin from three months after the traumatic event to years after it took place in a person's life, although it must last a month to be PTSD.
