The scariest concept of human phycology is dependance. Depending on someone or something for security, hope, happiness or even just a simple favor. It requires complete trust and faith in that person, and by the time you know if they are reliable or not it is too late. Billions of people put their faith and trust in God, depending on and confiding in him with every challenge they face with confidence he will help them through life. However, God is a belief, not a person but just a philosophy, so what can build and destroy the connection people depend on? He powerfully states “For God’s sake, where is God? And from within me I heard a voice answer: where is he? This is where - hanging here from this gallows.” (Wiesel 65) Elie uses this metaphor to admit he has lost his trust and hope in God’s abilities however he still believes in his existence. There is only so much strain and damage the bond between a person and God can take before you begin to question if God really deserves your trust. The Novel night shows us that no matter how strong your faith in God is, your trust can still be tested by any insecurity. In the heat of the crisis, Elie’s trust in God was tested and as he continued to fail Elie, he was forced to lose his trust in God. Elie lost his only source of hope, he depended on God amid chaos, and God was not there for him. Possibly the biggest heartbreak for Elie was being deserted by God; the same God he confided in and depended on in full confidence that God would be there to help him in any situation Elie faced.
