Do the Right Thing is a brilliant cinematic depiction of what life is like in Brooklyn, New York in a neighborhood flooded with pluralism. As tensions and temperatures rise we see an unraveling of events which spiral into a tragedy. This film has without a doubt withstood the test of time; hence, remaining significant and relevant to our culture today. The movie opens with Mookie, a young African American, who works at Sal’s Famous Pizzeria. Sal’s pizzeria is owned by Sal and his two sons Vito and Pino. It is clear that Sal and his sons have racist tendencies, especially Pino. However, they have all been able to coexist in the neighborhood for many years, which is primarily composed of African Americans. This is an example of pluralism. …show more content…
Raheem was previously in Sal’s with his boombox blaring and was told by Sal and his son to leave because he refused to turn the music off. He felt angry by this so agreed to support Buggin’ Out in the boycott of the pizzeria. The dyad march into Sal’s before closing and demand that Sal add African Americans to the wall of fame. Raheem is once again blasting his boombox which angers Sal. They begin hurling racial obscenities back and forth. Sal eventually grabs a bat and destroys the boombox. Raheem is enraged by this and the two enter into a physical altercation which spills outside onto the street.The two battle back and forth while a large crowd gathers around them. After a few moments, the police officers arrive to break up the fight. They immediately grab Raheem, one police officer places him in a choke hold resulting in his death. The police officers throw Raheem’s body in the back of the squad car. They hastily rush off, leaving Sal and his sons alone without protection. The crown quickly becomes a riotous mob and turn their aggression toward Sal and his sons, blaming them for the mortality.Mookie picks up a trash can and throws it into Sal’s shop window. The mob immediately shift their rage towards Sal’s shop and rush in, ransacking and destroying the place. The shop is engulfed in flames and left completely destroyed after the crowd is
